Despite new ownership, Pads still likely to deal ace
The Padres' sale to a group led by Jeff Moorad does not change the team's position on trading right-hander Jake Peavy, according to a source with knowledge of the club's thinking.

"The odds are the same," the source said.

The Padres maintain that they only will trade Peavy if the deal makes baseball sense. However, their season ticket sales have dropped from about 15,000 in 2008 to "well below" 10,000, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The increasing financial pressure might compel the Padres to move Peavy, particularly if they could land a package from the Cubs headed by minor-league third baseman Josh Vitters, a top hitting prospect.

The teams have had no recent conversations; the Cubs are in the middle of their own ownership transition, and remain unsure whether their prospective new owners, the Ricketts family, will be willing to add payroll.

Peavy, 27, is owed $59 million over the next four seasons, and his contract includes a $22 million club option or $4 million buyout for 2013. He could require the Cubs to exercise his option in exchange for waiving his no-trade clause.

Will Nomar play?

Free-agent infielder Nomar Garciaparra, who continues to draw interest from the Phillies, is trying to decide whether he is physically sound enough to play next season.

"He's testing his legs and making sure he's healthy," Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. says. "He's being tremendously respectful to himself and to us. He doesn't want to put himself in a position where we're relying on him and he's not going to be able to perform."

Both the Phillies and Giants pursued infielder Ty Wigginton, who agreed to a two-year, $6 million free-agent contract with the Orioles on Tuesday. The Phillies actually were confident of landing Wigginton for the right-handed hitting reserve role they envision for Garciaparra. The Orioles, however, offered Wigginton a better deal and more playing time.

Wakamatsu: The next Tanner?

Like any new manager, the Mariners' Don Wakamatsu is largely a mystery. However, one scout who knows Wakamatsu says that the former Rangers and A's coach will be perfect for the underachieving M's.

"He's like Chuck Tanner," the scout says. "He will maximize what he gets out of players who are considered to be problem players. He'll put his arm around them and talk to them, get something out of them."

New Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik relishes the comparison of Wakamatsu to Tanner, whom he considers a good friend.

Tanner managed four clubs from 1970 to '88, winning the World Series with the '79 Pirates.

"There aren't many people on this earth like Chuck Tanner, as a person that understands people, as a motivator," Zduriencik says. "If Don has any of those qualities, he will be pretty special."

Around the horn

The A's, outbid by the Rays for free-agent left-hander Brian Shouse, found a surprising alternative when the Cubs offered them righty Michael Wuertz, a pitcher they had liked in the past.

Wuertz's overall stats are impressive, but he seems to lose his slider at some point every season and fall into slumps. While not a good fit for Cubs manager Lou Piniella, he could be a useful seventh-inning reliever for the A's ...

The Orioles are taking worthwhile gambles in trades for players such as outfielder Felix Pie and left-hander Rich Hill, but each of those deals could end up costing them a pitcher who had minor-league options remaining.

Lefty Garrett Olson went to the Cubs in the Pie trade, and righty Brian Burres was designated for assignment to clear a spot for Hill. Three other Orioles pitchers — Hill, David Pauley and Hayden Penn — are out of options.
