SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The San Francisco Giants activated infielder Kevin Frandsen from the 60-day disabled list on Saturday after he spent the entire season recovering from a ruptured Achilles' tendon that required surgery.
Frandsen had been playing in the Arizona instructional league and the Giants deemed him ready to return. He had been pushing the athletic trainers and manager Bruce Bochy all year to give him a chance to come back before the conclusion of the 2008 season."I'm doing well. I'm doing great, actually," Frandsen said with a smile as he headed out of the clubhouse to take the field for pregame warmups.
The 26-year-old Frandsen headed into spring training with a chance to earn the starting job at second base against now-departed Ray Durham, but the injury derailed that competition.
Frandsen arrived in Scottsdale, Ariz., in the best shape of his young career after a rigorous offseason regimen. He has played only parts of two major league seasons the past two years, but appeared in 109 games for the Giants in 2007 and batted .269 with five homers and 31 RBIs.
"He's been playing down there and he feels great," Bochy said. "He's been swinging the bat. I think it's important for Kevin, too. He wanted to be here. It's a reward for him. He's been working so hard to get back here."
Frandsen will be used off the bench to pinch hit or as a defensive replacement.
