"My arm feels really good," the 6-foot-10 right-hander said. "It really does. I got some swings and misses on my fastball, the slider was sharp. ... Thats why I dont put a whole lot of stock in spring training results. I felt really good. I felt like the ball was coming out of my hand better than my results."
After falling behind 9-1, the Padres rallied behind Headley and Luis Rodriguez. Headley finished 4-for-5 with a double, home run and three RBIs while Rodriguez had three singles and an RBI.
Young's day began on a sour note when Randy Winn beat out a bunt single to open the first inning. Edgar Renteria then reached when left fielder Chase Headley lost a routine fly ball in the sun, resulting in a double. Three batters later, San Francisco's Travis Ishikawa - expected to win the starting job at first base - ripped an inside fastball for his sixth home run of the spring.
"The home run was a mistake," Young said. "I missed my spot and he hit it out. But I'm not going to put a whole lot of stock into it aside from I want to be a little sharper."
Notes: Reigning National League Cy Young award winner Tim Lincecum pitched for the Giants in a Triple-A game in Scottsdale. Lincecum, who was 18-5 with a 2.62 ERA last season, allowed a run on three hits while striking out six over five innings.
