Padres-Giants Preview
The San Francisco Giants are hoping the momentum they picked up on the road will carry over to their own ball park.

The Giants will be trying to build on an encouraging trip as they open a three-game series with the San Diego Padres at AT&T Park on Friday.

San Francisco (23-31) wrapped up a three-game sweep of the NL West-leading Arizona Diamondbacks with Thursday's 4-3 win. The victory also ended a 6-3 road trip for the Giants, who now return home for six games.

The Giants have dropped five straight at home and were swept in three games by the Chicago White Sox in their last series at AT&T Park May 16-18. However, they have won four straight against the Padres (21-34) since losing the first meeting of the season, and took both games of a two-game set in San Diego April 23-24.

The Padres' 8-19 record on the road ranks among the worst in baseball.

San Francisco will certainly have momentum on its side as it returns to the Bay Area after outscoring the Diamondbacks 21-9. Randy Winn hit his second solo homer in the ninth on Thursday, helping the Giants overcome nine strikeouts against Arizona starter Randy Johnson, who moved into a tie for second with Roger Clemens on the all-time list.

"We got some breaks there in the eighth, but you take it," manager Bruce Bochy said. "It's a great series for us, a great way to finish a good road trip."

The Padres own the second-worst overall record in the NL, ahead of only Colorado, but have won three of four. They beat Washington 5-2 on Thursday on a three-run, eighth-inning homer from Jody Gerut.

"Certainly we've played a lot of close games, a lot of low-scoring games, and we're happy for the offense," Gerut said.

The win allowed the Padres to break even on their 10-game homestand, during which they tied a franchise record with 15 homers. They had 15 homers in a homestand twice before, both lasting 11 games.

In Friday's opener, San Diego will hand the ball to Greg Maddux (3-4, 3.76 ERA), who is 0-1 with a 4.30 ERA in three starts since winning his 350th game on May 10 against Colorado. He gave up four runs - one earned - in 5 1-3 innings in the Padres' 18-inning, 12-9 win over Cincinnati on Sunday.

Maddux is 6-0 with a 2.42 ERA in 11 starts against the Giants since his last loss against them on May 9, 2003 while still with Atlanta. He has made 51 career starts against San Francisco, going 29-14 with a 2.80 ERA.

San Francisco counters with Matt Cain (2-3, 4.43), who gave up two runs in six innings but didn't get a decision in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader, a 5-4 loss in Florida.

Cain has made 13 career starts against the Padres, his most against any opponent, going 3-4 with a 2.32 ERA - his lowest against any NL foe. He has dropped four straight decisions against the Padres since a win on Sept. 8, 2006, but held them to one run in seven innings in San Francisco's 13-inning, 3-2 win in San Diego on April 23.
