Prep report: Redwood loses heartbreaker to Bishop O'Dowd
Marin Independent Journal

Down 9-4 in the top of the seventh inning in an Adam Westcott Tournament game at Casa Grande, the Redwood High Baseball team rallied for six runs behind Zak Ferrando's bases-loaded double, only to see Bishop O'Dowd score twice in the bottom half of the inning to claim an 11-10 win in Santa Rosa on Monday.

The Giants (10-5) trailed 8-2 in the top of the fifth, but Robbie Chrisman, who was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored, hit a two-run homer to make it 8-4. The Dragons (13-2) added a run in the top bottom of the fifth, but Redwood tied the game on Ferrando's seventh-inning, three-run double and claimed the lead when Ferrando took home on a passed ball.

Still, Redwood could not compensate for six errors and the inability to hold Bishop O'Dowd runners on. The Dragons were successful on 11 of 12 stolen base attempts.

"The six runs we scored in the top of the seventh was a great sign for us," Redwood coach Stefan Wever said. "For us to have rolled over would have been pretty easy since we were pretty lethargic the first couple innings. We were just giving away runs. The first half of the season when we were playing really well we weren't giving away any runs. The last few games we've been giving away runs and that's why we've struggled a little bit here in the last few games."

The Giants' Alex Boeri was 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and two runs, while teammate Tad Finnie was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI in a losing effort.

Cardinal Newman 11, Drake 6

The difference: The Cardinals (13-4) broke the game open with a six-run fifth inning against the Pirates (11-5) in an opening-day game in the Adam Wescott Tournament at Casa Grande High in Petaluma. Cardinal Newman, which out-hit Drake 14-8, chased Drake starter Cory Bostjancic during its big inning.

From the coach: "We played them tough until the fifth inning," Drake's Rick Lafranchi said. "But we battled them all the way to the end. They were a very good hitting team. They're among the best teams we've seen all year. Cory struggled in the first inning, but the next three innings he pitched well. But in the fifth he ran out of gas."

Notable: Drake's Patrick Conroy had a double and his ninth home run in the loss. ... Cardinal Newman entered the game with a team batting average of .391. ... Drake will next face Rancho Cotate at Casa Grande at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

San Marin 13, Mt. Diablo 3

The difference: Riley Fewell and Jack Connolly combined on a two-hitter and J.T. Delagnes drove in four runs as the Mustangs (7-7) defeated the Red Devils (0-14) in the American Eagle Classic in Fremont. Fewell pitched 4 1/3 innings, and Connolly finished, striking out the first two batters he faced with the bases loaded to end the fifth inning.

From the coach: "We had good pitching and timely hitting today," San Marin's Mark Whitburn said. "It was just a good overall effort."

Notable: San Marin's Delagnes, Christian Lowrie and Brian Soares each had two hits. With the win, the Mustangs avoided having to play at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday - "That was our goal," Whitburn joked - and will next play San Lorenzo in the tournament at 11 a.m. on Wednesday.

San Lorenzo 11, Terra Linda 10

The difference: After forcing extra innings with a run in the seventh inning and then taking the lead with two runs in the top of the eighth, the Trojans (0-16) couldn't hold off the Rebels (3-11) in the bottom of the eighth in the American Eagle Classic in Fremont.

From the coach: "It's tough losing close games, especially when you are leading going into the bottom of the inning. But these guys have got to learn to play with a lead," Terra Linda's Jesse Madsen said. "You learn a lot more from a game like this rather than a game you win by a lot or lose by a lot. We're getting better and better every day."

Notable: Terra Linda's Michael Gold was 4-for-4, Marty Smith was 3-for-4, and freshman Jake Toll-McKillop, in his varsity debut, was 3-for-4 with a double. Earlier in the day, the Trojans opened play in the tourney with an 8-0 loss to Red Bluff (16-4) in which they were limited to three singles. ... Terra Linda returns to tournament play with an 8:30 a.m. game Wednesday.

Novato 3, Elsie Allen 1

The difference: Jeff Stephens and Jeff Tanaka were offensive standouts for the Hornets (8-6) in a win at the West Sonoma tournament. Tanaka was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and Stephens was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, both of which scored Tanaka. Brandon Gudgel was 2-for-4 and also got the save for Novato.

From the coach: "We went back to small ball again," Novato's Bob Scheppler said. "Tanaka and Stephens got on and drove each other in, and it was a great day for our pitching and our defense."

Notable: Robby Curry had a solid start for Novato, scattering three hits and a run over five innings with three strikeouts and no walks.

Cloverdale 1, St. Vincent 0

The scoop: Novato's Matt Rohrs pitched in relief and took the loss for the Mustangs, but he did have two of his team's three hits.

GIRLS SOCCER

Marin Academy 6, Head-Royce 0

The difference: Lorin Hom, sidelined for eight months because of a knee injury, returned with two goals and an assist and Mira Lowenstein and Torie White each added a goal and an assist to help the Wildcats (7-1-2) defeat the visiting Jayhawks in a non-league match. MA led only 1-0 at halftime.

From the coach: "We're a possession-oriented team and as the game wore on and they had to start attacking a bit more, they started tiring a bit," Marin Academy's Josh Kalkstein said. "Piece by piece, we're starting to get healthy. Lorin is still far from full strength, but she certainly makes a difference. She only played 25 minutes and look what she did."

Notable: Frances Cameron and Jo Ubben also scored and Danielle LaRoy earned the shutout, with her biggest save coming on a shot from point-blank range when the MA lead was 1-0.

BOYS TENNIS

Marin Academy 4, Bay School 1

The difference: The Wildcats' Ben Barad fell to Will Tophan 4-6, 7-6 (3), 10-4 at No. 1 singles, but MA (13-2, 9-0) won the rest of the matches against the Breakers (0-8, 0-8) in a Bay Counties League West match at Golden Gate Park.

From the coach: "This is their first year in tennis, so they have a lot of guys probably competing for their first time," MA's Geoff Martinez said of Bay. "But the top two matches they had two pretty good players. Ben played well and Luke Frisher (at No. 2 singles) played pretty well."

Notable: Barad's second set featured seven consecutive service breaks.
