The Giants hit 24 home runs in their first 16 Cactus League games, quite a change of pace for the only team that failed to reach triple-digit homers last year.
Before Giants fans look ahead to a power-laden season -- after all, the only addition to the lineup is Edgar Renteria -- let manager Bruce Bochy provide some reality.
"We're in Arizona. The balls carry here," Bochy said. "At the same time, you do like the way they're swinging."
Many of the homers were hit by players who won't be with the Giants on Opening Day, including Ryan Rohlinger, who led the team with three -- all coming in a four-day stretch, all ninth-inning shots.
Rohlinger hit poorly in his big-league debut in 2008, batting .094 with no homers in 32 at-bats. Like Bochy, Rohlinger played down the spring training power numbers, saying, "It's early. I'm fresh. The bat's lighter than it will be at the end of the year."
Travis Ishikawa hit two homers in the team's first exhibition game. Pablo Sandoval had two homers. Otherwise, no hitter penciled into the Opening Day lineup had more than one.
One was cleanup hitter Bengie Molina's total.
So Bochy's right. Nothing to get excited about for now.
Now if Manny Ramirez were a Giant ...
