San Francisco Giants Inside Pitch 2009-03-25

San Francisco Giants Inside Pitch 2009-03-25
Left-hander Jonathan Sanchez is back in his routine after a tour with Puerto Rico brought him through two rounds of the World Baseball Classic.

And just two starts and 6 2/3 innings.

Sanchez is penciled into the Giants rotation, but his workload is far below that of other starters.

For example, Barry Zito had pitched 19 2/3 innings in five starts through March 20. Matt Cain had gone 16 1/3 innings, also in five starts.

"I thought I was going to throw more," Sanchez said after arriving in the Giants' camp. "I had six and seven days of rest. I'm not ahead."

Sanchez threw four shutout innings and beat the Netherlands -- something no Dominican pitcher can say -- but struggled in the second-round elimination loss to Team USA, getting pulled in the third inning after giving up three runs and a homer to Kevin Youkilis.

The good news is, spring training is long this year -- if only to give players in the WBC more time to prepare for the season. The Giants expect Sanchez to get three starts.

Before leaving camp for the WBC, Sanchez pitched once.
