San Francisco Giants Inside Pitch 2009-04-21

San Francisco Giants Inside Pitch 2009-04-21
Based on the Giants' ineffective offense, the team should feel fortunate to be 4-8.

The Giants won two of three from the Diamondbacks over the weekend despite scoring just four runs. It helped that three starters (Jonathan Sanchez, Tim Lincecum and Randy Johnson) combined for 21 2/3 scoreless innings.

Imagine if the offense could generate some rallies.

So far, there has been little of that.

The Giants rank last in the league in homers (six), RBIs (31), walks (23) and on-base percentage/slugging percentage (.646).

They're second from last in runs (37), total bases (133), on-base percentage (.297) and slugging percentage (.349).

Just two NL teams have struck out more times (Giants: 103), and just one has hit into more double plays (Giants: 13).

Manager Bruce Bochy shuffled his lineup again Sunday. While it provided immediate results for new No. 6 hitter Pablo Sandoval (three hits), it didn't work so well for new leadoff hitter Fred Lewis (three strikeouts).

Bochy said he'll keep the lineup intact for a few games, hoping the 3-4-5 alignment of Randy Winn, Bengie Molina and Aaron Rowand, all veterans, will help jumpstart the offense and set an example for struggling hitters such as Travis Ishikawa and Sandoval.
