San Francisco Giants Inside Pitch 2009-04-27

San Francisco Giants Inside Pitch 2009-04-27
Brian Wilson blew a save opportunity for the first time this season and permitted the Diamondbacks three ninth-inning runs. Arizona won it in the 12th, and Wilson stood at his locker and called the situation "disheartening."

Wilson said he wasn't tired.

"Fatigue is not something that enters my body," he said.

But manager Bruce Bochy would prefer to give some of his relievers rest. The bullpen threw five innings Sunday after throwing 5 2/3 Saturday.

Plus, lefty Jeremy Affeldt has appeared in three straight games and seven of eight.

Barry Zito pitched last Monday's series opener against the Dodgers, and Bochy is hoping he'll pitch deep into the game -- as he did in his last start (seven scoreless innings against San Diego).

If he labors and needs help, Bochy vowed to go with Merkin Valdez, who hasn't appeared in a game since April 6. Bochy also hinted the Giants might add a pitcher for the three-game Dodgers series.

DIAMONDBACKS 5, GIANTS 4: Brian Wilson gave up three runs in the ninth, two on Justin Upton's homer, and Conor Jackson won it for the Diamondbacks in the 12th on a bases-loaded, full-count single off Justin Miller. Matt Cain gave up one run in seven innings, and Pablo Sandoval had a career-high four hits. But the situational hitting, baserunning and bullpen cost the team its sixth straight victory.
