San Francisco Giants Inside Pitch 2008-05-30

San Francisco Giants Inside Pitch 2008-05-30
Barry Zito pitched six innings Thursday. Randy Johnson lasted seven. When they exited, the Big Unit seemed destined for a 3-2 victory.

But neither got a decision. The Giants touched the Diamondbacks bullpen for the tying run in the eighth and winning run in the ninth. Randy Winn, who had homered off Johnson, hit another off reliever Chad Qualls to win it.

The Giants' nine-game trip ended with six victories, capped by a three-game sweep in Arizona.

Johnson won the matchup of left-handers. He was perfect for three innings and struck out nine batters, giving him 4,672 in his career to match Roger Clemens for second place all-time. Five of the strikeouts came in the first three innings.

But Zito wasn't half-bad, registering a quality start. For just the second time this season, the Giants won a game in which Zito pitched. He struck out five batters for the second consecutive start, though he gave up a homer to Justin Upton.

GIANTS 4, DIAMONDBACKS 3: The Giants tied the score 3-3 with an unearned run in the eighth when Fred Lewis drew a bases-loaded walk, and Randy Winn's second homer of the game won it in the ninth. Winn also homered off Randy Johnson to begin the third. The Giants moved ahead 2-1 on Omar Vizquel's single but fell behind 3-2 before rallying late.
