San Francisco Giants Inside Pitch 2009-05-07

San Francisco Giants Inside Pitch 2009-05-07
For the Giants, the beginning of Wednesday's 11-1 loss to the Rockies was all about Randy Johnson's struggles.

Then it became clear: This was equally about an inept offense that produced just five hits at Coors Field.

Even when the Giants trailed 3-0 in the middle of the game, it became obvious who'd win this one. The Giants' offense isn't potent enough to overcome most deficits. When the Rockies scored four times in the sixth, it suddenly became garbage time and evident that Johnson wasn't getting his 298th career win.

Manager Bruce Bochy stressed afterward about the need to score more runs. Even if Tim Lincecum pitched this one, the Giants would have had little chance to win.

Check out these averages: Emmanuel Burriss, .232; Randy Winn, .228; Aaron Rowand, .222; Rich Aurilia, .219; Travis Ishikawa, .200; Eugenio Velez, .167.

Fred Lewis struck out three times and still has just one RBI on the season.

ROCKIES 11, GIANTS 1: The Giants made Ubaldo Jimenez look like an All-Star, collecting just three hits in seven innings. Jimenez was removed in the eighth after Emmanuel Burriss scored on a Juan Uribe groundout after advancing to third on Eugenio Velez's pinch double. Todd Helton homered for Colorado and had three hits.
