San Francisco Giants Inside Pitch 2009-05-15
As the Mets celebrated their 7-4 victory in San Francisco on Thursday, the Giants wondered what happened to them.

For the first time since 1999, a team swiped seven bases against the Giants. David Wright had four of the Mets' seven steals. Three of the team's steals came in the ninth inning during New York's decisive three-run rally.

The last time a team ran so wild against the Giants? The Astros in 1999.

Thursday, it wasn't just catcher Bengie Molina's fault.

The pitchers did a sub-par job holding runners close to bases. Closer Brian Wilson pitched the ninth. Carlos Beltran doubled and stole third -- and scored on Wright's single.

"I knew they were a good running ball team. Obviously, I didn't think he'd steal third right there. He did," Wilson said.

After Gary Sheffield walked, he and Wright pulled off a double steal.

Both scored on Ramon Castro's single.

The seven steals were a Mets record, and they set it with speedy Jose Reyes shelved due to a calf injury.

METS 7, GIANTS 4: The Giants rallied for two runs in the eighth to tie the score at 4 on RBI singles by Juan Uribe and Edgar Renteria. But the Mets scored three runs in the ninth off Brian Wilson to win the opener of a four-game series. The Mets took a 4-2 lead, scoring all four runs off Jonathan Sanchez.
