Pat Misch will make his first start of 2008 and fifth in his career Friday when the Giants open a series in Philadelphia. Misch is taking the place of fallen ace Barry Zito.
Zito has a new role with the Giants. On Friday, he'll be available for the first time in relief. His 0-6 start in which he produced a 7.53 ERA got him reassigned to the bullpen. His last start was Sunday, and the announcement of his demotion was made Monday. Now, he could be summoned out of the bullpen by manager Bruce Bochy.
Misch was recalled from Class AAA Fresno on Sunday, not to replace Zito but to replace injured Kevin Correia, who went on the disabled list with a strained left side. Misch pitched Sunday in relief of Zito, who lasted just three innings and surrendered eight earned runs.
Misch worked the final six innings and gave up two runs on solo homers by Brandon Phillips.
