Moments later, however, Pat Burrell hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th off Brian Wilson to hand the Giants a 6-4 loss.
So much for Rowand's warm welcome to the City of Brotherly Love.
Rowand appreciated that Phillies fans cheered him before his first at-bat in the second inning, and he responded by tipping his helmet to the crowd. Rowand left Philly after last season to sign a five-year, $60 million contract with San Francisco.
With Barry Bonds leaving, Rowand arrived to help usher in a new Giants era. He had a solid April, insisting to play despite a cracked rib, and has been one of the Giants' most effective hitters. That the Giants aren't in last place is a testament to some solid pitching and key hitting, with Rowand certainly in the mix.
Aside from Rowand's 10th-inning homer, he hit a fourth-inning single and scored the Giants' first run, coming around on Jose Castillo's single.
Meantime, a Giant-turned-Phillie, Pedro Feliz, went 2-for-4 with a home run.
PHILLIES 6, GIANTS 5 (10 innings): Pat Burrell's two-out, two-run homer in the bottom off the 10th ended the game and handed Brian Wilson his second blown save and first loss. The Giants had 16 hits, a season high. The Phillies won their ninth game in 12 tries.
