Giantsportal.com | San Francisco Giants News, giants Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - What's a seven-run lead between longtime rivals?
Not much. At least with Kevin Correia on the mound Monday night. In the series opener at Dodger Stadium, the Giants were moseying along with a 7-0 lead until they collapsed in the fifth inning. Sloppy pitching and sloppy defense, along with some key hitting, helped the Dodgers rally for five runs and turn it into a tight game.
The inning started in a rotten way for the Giants with James Loney reaching on second baseman Jose Castillo's error. Later in the inning, Castillo -- who had two two-out RBIs in the game -- backed up first base on a play in which he should have covered first base; catcher Bengie Molina picked up Juan Pierre's bunt and threw to an empty bag for the inning's second error.
The first six batters of the inning reached, one on an error and the next five on hits. At one point, Russell Martin was at the plate representing the possible tying run. But Martin lined out, and the inning finally ended when Jeff Kent struck out.
Correia, who had thrown four scoreless innings, remained on the mound throughout the entire fifth. In the top of the sixth, Correia batted for himself with one out and the bases empty. However, two batters into the sixth, after Casey Blake doubled for his second hit, Correia was gone.
But when the Giants' bullpen showed up, Blake scored on Andrew Jones' double, the run charged to Correia, who got the win to improve to 2-5.
GIANTS 7, DODGERS 6: The Giants scored five runs in the fourth inning Monday for a 7-0 lead, but Kevin Correia gave up six runs in the fifth and sixth innings. From there, three relievers -- Tyler Walker, Jack Taschner and Brian Wilson -- threw three perfect innings to shut the door on the Dodgers' threats. New Dodger Casey Blake was ejected in the eighth inning, as was his manager, Joe Torre, after Blake struck out.
