San Francisco Giants Inside Pitch 2008-09-01

San Francisco Giants Inside Pitch 2008-09-01
The Giants are in baseball's worst division, the NL West. Imagine if they were in the NL Central.

They'd play more games against the group of teams that caused them more anguish than any other. The Giants were swept in Cincinnati, capped by Sunday's 9-3 loss, and that brought their record against NL Central teams to 9-28.

They're 50-49 against all other divisions.

The bad news? It's not over.

There are three more games against the Pirates next weekend.

As for the Reds, they swept the Giants in a three-game series in Cincinnati for the first time since June 1994. They were especially effective against the three Giants' starters, Barry Zito, Kevin Correia and Matt Cain, whose ERA in the series was 11.30.

Despite getting swept in Cincy, the Giants completed their only winning month. They were 15-14 in August.

REDS 9, GIANTS 3: The score was tied 1-1 in the second inning, but Matt Cain gave up an RBI single to Jeff Keppinger and walked Jay Bruce with the bases loaded to make it 3-1. Emmanuel Burriss' homer made it 3-2, but Cain gave up two runs in the fifth. The Reds put it away on Joey Votto's three-run double off left fielder Fred Lewis' glove in the seventh Sunday.
