San Francisco Giants Notes, Quotes 2008-12-01
--2B Orlando Hudson could be an option if the Giants don't sign a free agent shortstop. Hudson hit a career-high .305 as the Diamondbacks' No. 3 hitter but was limited to 107 games because of a season-ending injury for a second straight year. If the Giants acquired Hudson, Emmanuel Burriss could be the favorite to play shortstop.

--CF Aaron Rowand's average went down 38 points (.309 to .271), but it wasn't the biggest one-season drop in his career. He fell 40 points -- from .310 in 2004 to .270 in 2005, both seasons with the White Sox. While he also dropped in homers in '04 (24 to 13), this year's power decrease was more dramatic (27-13).

--SS Edgar Renteria was the subject of a false report by WFAN in New York, which reported he signed a two-year, $18 million contract with the Giants. Both the club and the player's agent, Barry Meister, denied the report, though the Giants confirmed they have interest in the free agent.

--LF Barry Bonds, who sat out the 2008 season and spent time hunting with former teammate Ryan Klesko, is a spokesman for Christensen Arms, which produces guns, particularly hunting rifles. In an info-video for the company, Bonds is seen pointing a rifle and hunting down a whitetail deer in Canada, and a Web photo shows him smiling with a dead animal.

--The Giants will play a whopping 41 exhibitions in spring training, the most in team history. Thanks in part to the World Baseball Classic, the schedule starts earlier than normal and ends later than normal. For the first time since 1981, the Giants will play spring training games against the rival Dodgers, who are moving their training camp from Florida to Arizona.

BY THE NUMBERS: 91 -- RBIs while in the lineup as a catcher for Bengie Molina, who had 94 RBIs overall. Only one Giant in San Francisco history had more RBIs as a catcher. It was Dick Dietz, 104 in 1970.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "You never know if (a free agent) might be interested. Having said that, we know what the competition's going to be. Make no mistake. It's a short list of quote, premium difference-makers. Very short." -- GM Brian Sabean, explaining why the Giants have wanted to touch bases with elite free agents, including LHP CC Sabathia and 1B Mark Teixeira.
