San Francisco Giants Notes, Quotes 2009-03-03
--LHP Noah Lowry, who hasn't pitched since August 2007, had a setback, and it doesn't appear as if he'll be ready to begin the season. He felt elbow pain in the wake of feeling tightness behind his shoulder, and his slow start reaffirms LHP Jonathan Sanchez as the front-runner for the No. 5 starting slot. Sanchez will pitch in the World Baseball Classic for Puerto Rico.

--1B Travis Ishikawa hit two homers in the Giants' exhibition opener against the Indians, one off LHP Zach Jackson and one off RHP Edward Mujica. Ishikawa, who also hit an RBI single, is trying to convince management not to bring in another corner infielder from the outside. "Going in, it's my job to lose," said Ishikawa, who hit .274 with three homers in 95 at-bats for the Giants last year.

--LHP Randy Johnson's first outing as a Giant was so-so. He pitched two innings and had two strikeouts but was a bit wild -- he hit a batter and threw a wild pitch, which led to a run. Johnson, who is five victories shy of 300, is penciled in as the No. 2 starter behind RHP Tim Lincecum.

--OF Nate Schierholtz still feels the effect of his violent collision at the plate in the Olympics with Chinese C Yang Yang. He recently went to get a crown over a tooth that was chipped in the collision, and the dentist found exposed nerves and performed an emergency root canal. Schierholtz is the Giants' fourth outfielder and could get ample time at the corners.

--SS Omar Vizquel, a Giant for three years who's now trying to win a job with the Rangers, told the San Francisco Chronicle, "I don't think (Bruce) Bochy was my type of manager. I always went along with his decisions. I never said anything in the paper about him, but sometimes I wished he could be more aggressive with the moves that he made. But everybody has his style, and you can't change that."

To which Bochy said, "Anytime a veteran feels like that, you'd like to hear it (then), not the following year."

BY THE NUMBERS: 94 -- Homers by the Giants last year, fewest in the majors. It's the main reason the Giants remain interested in signing LF Manny Ramirez.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Swing the stinking bat." -- LHP Randy Johnson, telling Giants hitters during one of his recent throwing sessions. The Big Unit figured it was more beneficial to have batters swing at his pitches than stand at the plate like statues.
