Giantsportal.com | San Francisco Giants News, giants Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - --RHP Tim Lincecum faced Mariners OF Ichiro Suzuki for the first time -- when the Giants played Japan's World Baseball Classic team -- and Ichiro hit a broken-bat groundout and drew a walk. "I went after him like I would any other batter," said Lincecum, who grew up in the Seattle area and followed Ichiro's early big-league career. Though the stats didn't officially count in the Cactus League, Lincecum tossed 2 1/3 shutout innings, extending his scoreless streak to 9 1/3 innings.
--LHP Jonathan Sanchez tossed four scoreless innings against the Netherlands in Puerto Rico's final game of the World Baseball Classic's first round, and the Giants hope his international experience will help during the season. "I think it's going to make him better," C Bengie Molina said. "Sanchez needs a whole year of consistency to prove to himself and us and the organization that he could do it on a regular basis." Sanchez won eight games before the All-Star break last year but went 1-7 the rest of the season. --C Buster Posey, the fifth overall pick in last year's draft, was impressing the Giants in his first training camp. He started 4-for-11 and looked solid behind the plate, throwing out the only runner who tried to steal and calling pitches for the first time in his career. At Florida State, coaches called the pitches. "I feel more and more comfortable," said Posey, who's playing in C Bengie Molina's shadow for now.
--LHP Randy Johnson's ERA in his first four starts (including a four-inning stint in minor league camp) was 0.73 -- one earned run in 12 1/3 innings. He's not throwing in the high 90s anymore, but he said he's fine with that. "I'm in a different part of my career now. I'm not searching for 98. I'm searching for 93," said Johnson, 45. "That might be one reason why I've had a little more success this spring training compared with past spring trainings."
--SS Brian Bocock was hitting .333 (4-for-12) and playing his usual steady defense, but he doesn't have a chance to make the Opening Day roster. Last year, he was the shortstop in the season opener -- rushed to the majors out of Class A -- because Omar Vizquel was coming off knee surgery. Bocock hit .143 and was sent to the minors in mid-May.
BY THE NUMBERS: .071 -- Randy Winn's batting average through March 13. He had two hits in 28 at-bats, but he's slated to be the Opening Day right fielder after hitting .300 last year.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "I'm not expecting anything. I'm expecting to play my game and play hard. I'm just worried about myself and how I play, getting great at-bats, no wasted at-bats." -- Kevin Frandsen, who's competing with Emmanuel Burriss for the starting second base job.
