San Francisco Giants Notes, Quotes 2009-03-31

San Francisco Giants Notes, Quotes 2009-03-31
--RHP Osiris Matos and OF John Bowker, both of whom split last season between Class AAA Fresno and San Francisco, were optioned to Fresno. Matos, who was bidding for a spot in the Giants' muddled bullpen, posted a 4.22 ERA this spring. Bowker's .211 spring average cost him his shot at a reserve role.

--SS Edgar Renteria sat out his second game in a row on March 30 due to a sore right elbow. He is day-to-day.

--LHP Jack Taschner, who struggled in spring training, was dealt to the Phillies for C Ronny Paulino, 27, a .278 hitter in 304 major league games, all with the Pirates. Philadelphia had acquired Paulino from Pittsburgh in the offseason. Taschner's 12 walks in 8 2/3 spring innings made management uneasy. He received an $830,000 contract, having been eligible for arbitration.

Paulino didn't stick around long. Hours after the Giants acquired him, they dealt him to the Marlins in exchange for RHP Hector Correa. In 2008, Correa was limited to five games in the low minors due to arm trouble. Giants vice president of baseball operations Dan Evans told the San Francisco Chronicle that Correa "has a good arm if he can stay healthy."

--LHP Randy Johnson, reflecting on his 34 wins in two seasons with the Yankees and also his two postseasons in which he yielded 10 earned runs in 13 innings, said, "I had a good time. The history, the stadium, the players that came through there, the championships they won. There are two seasons there. You got a regular season, and you got a postseason. It's the postseason you're usually measured by."

--C Buster Posey is possibly destined for an entire season in the minors. In a perfect world, that's what'll happen for the Giants' top pick (fifth overall) in the 2008 draft. Asked if Posey or fellow prospect LHP Madison Bumgarner would be with the Giants this season, GM Brian Sabean said, "I would hope not. It wouldn't be what we'd want for their development. We would be using them only in an injury situation. It would mean you're not going with the plan you set."

--LHP Jonathan Sanchez hadn't missed a beat despite his lack of activity while playing for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic. On March 27, he became the first pitcher in the Giants' camp to throw seven innings. He gave up two runs and seven hits (no walks, six strikeouts) against the Indians. He threw 81 pitches. He's penciled in as the No. 5 starter.

--RHPs Brandon Medders and Justin Miller have done a lot to earn bullpen spots. Through March 26, both had 0.00 ERAs, Medders through 10 1/3 innings and Miller through nine innings. Medders was a Diamondback last year, Miller a Marlin.

BY THE NUMBERS: 66, 63 -- At-bats for Kevin Frandsen and Emmanuel Burriss, respectively, who led the team through March 27 despite playing the same position, second base. It remained the biggest competition in camp. Frandsen was hitting .303, Burriss .392.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I was confused about what to do, so I went into a medium jog. I didn't know if I should walk all the way because that would take too long, so I did a courtesy half-jog and then I went into a walk." -- RHP Tim Lincecum, who had little idea how to enter as a reliever during a spring training game.
