Giantsportal.com | San Francisco Giants News, giants Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - --RHP Tim Lincecum, who lasted just three innings Tuesday (matching the shortest outing of his career), was among five homegrown players in the opening-day lineup. It marked the first time the Giants had that many players from their farm system in an opener since 1995, when the total was six. Joining Lincecum in this year's group: 1B Travis Ishikawa, 2B Emmanuel Burriss, 3B Pablo Sandoval and LF Fred Lewis.
--OF Andres Torres, 31, is on a big-league opening-day roster for the first time. "A lot of work has paid off," said Torres, who can play all three OF positions and is known for his defense and speed -- he led the PCL in steals last year with Class AAA Iowa (29). He showed a good bat in spring training, hitting .400, and has appeared in 89 games with Detroit and Texas. --C Bengie Molina is the only true catcher on the 25-man roster. The backup is 3B Pablo Sandoval. With four off days in April, the Giants expect Molina to play nearly every game with Sandoval starting perhaps twice. Rather than keeping a backup catcher, the Giants are keeping 12 pitchers.
BY THE NUMBERS: 21-19 -- Final spring training record for the Giants.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "You catch in the minors for four years, you can't forget it." -- Pablo Sandoval, the backup catcher who appeared behind the plate in only two spring training exhibitions.
