--SS Edgar Renteria had his first extra-base hit of the season, a double, and scored the Giants' first run Friday. But Renteria failed to cover second base on Luis Rodriguez's grounder to 2B Emmanuel Burriss with two out in the first inning, prolonging the inning one more batter.
--RHP Matt Cain won his first start in a season for the first time in his career, pitching seven innings and giving up one run on four hits Thursday. Cain, 15-30 the past two seasons and recipient of the lowest run support among NL starters in 2008, recorded his first win last year in his sixth start. --OF Dave Roberts, who was released with one year left on his contract, has joined the Giants' pre- and post-game broadcast team. During the game, he all but said he has retired, "for all intents and purposes," he added.
--RHP Tim Lincecum, who lasted just three innings Tuesday (matching the shortest outing of his career), was among five homegrown players in the opening-day lineup. It marked the first time the Giants had that many players from their farm system in an opener since 1995, when the total was six. Joining Lincecum in this year's group: 1B Travis Ishikawa, 2B Emmanuel Burriss, 3B Pablo Sandoval and LF Fred Lewis.
