--C Eliezer Alfonzo, who was busted for steroid use and suspended 50 games, was recalled from Class AAA Fresno. He replaced C Steve Holm, who was optioned to Fresno. Alfonzo said he tested positive for stanozolol, though he denied he knew he was taking a steroid. He also said he took it in December when he had bronchitis. Regardless, Alfonzo had a terrible spring training, hitting .091. He was tested positive while in Fresno, but he was suspended as if he were a big-leaguer because he was on the Giants' 40-man roster.
--RHP Billy Sadler walked the bases loaded and gave up a Mark DeRosa grand slam in relief Monday. On Tuesday, he was optioned to Class AAA Fresno and replaced by RHP Osiris Matos of Class AA Connecticut. Sadler was told he needs to work more on his command. --RHP Vinnie Chulk, who was designated for assignment last week, cleared waivers and was outrighted to Class AAA Fresno. Chulk was hinting he'd welcome a move to another team, but he was passed over by others.
--RHP Brian Wilson threw the ninth inning for his league-leading 23rd save in 25 chances. Again, it didn't come without suspense. His first batter, Derrek Lee, hit a triple, and Geovany Soto hit an RBI single.
--LF Fred Lewis had two of the Giants' five hits to raise his average to .285, and he scored both of the Giants' runs. Lewis topped .300 in both April and June, but he hit .204 in May.
