San Francisco Giants Notes, Quotes 2008-07-29
--RHP Kevin Correia helped himself, big time, with a rare base hit. The pitcher entered the game 1-for-12 (.083) with no RBIs. During the Giants' five-run fourth inning, he fell behind one ball and two strikes before hitting a two-run single with two outs.

--RHP Tyler Walker, who has struggled of late as the primary setup man -- he gave up three eighth-inning runs Sunday to ruin RHP Tim Lincecum's bid for a victory -- threw the seventh inning Monday. He retired all three Dodgers, all right-handed hitters, including 2B Jeff Kent on a fly to the wall in center for the final out.

--LHP Jack Taschner, who remains part of trade rumors with Thursday's trade deadline looming, pitched the eighth inning, getting the call instead of setup man Tyler Walker because manager Bruce Bochy wanted to use his late inning relievers to their strengths. So he pitched Walker against righties in the seventh and used Taschner in the eighth with two lefties coming up. Like Walker, Taschner had a 1-2-3 inning.

--RHP Brian Wilson entered in the ninth inning, aiming for his 28th save in 30 chances. Three outs later, No. 28 was his, the most in the NL. The save came six days after his last save (against the Nationals), and obviously he was fresh. He struck out two of three batters, both on 98-mph fastballs. He has converted 19 saves in a row.

--RHP Matt Cain, coming off his best start of the season, will pitch Tuesday night against the Dodgers. Cain is 6-8 after throwing a complete game to beat the Nationals 1-0, allowing four hits and lowering his ERA to 3.82. His first start of the season was against the Dodgers, and he threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings in a 3-2 loss.

BY THE NUMBERS: 215 -- Doubles the Giants have hit this season, helped out by their spacious home ballpark. They have the third most doubles in the league and they are on pace to set a San Francisco record for most doubles in a season.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "If you're doing the right things and you play the game the right way and go about your business, not only are you gaining experience and positive reinforcement with the successes you have, those are the games that help you grow as a player and help you build off what you're doing for the rest of your career." -- Giants OF Aaron Rowand on the progress the team is making this season.
