--SS Emmanuel Burriss hit his first big-league homer. A switch-hitter, Burriss went deep left-handed off RHP Bronson Arroyo. It was the first homer this year by a Giants shortstop. Omar Vizquel, Brian Bocock and Ivan Ochoa are homerless.
--RHP Matt Cain gave up five runs on five walks and eight hits -- including a two-run double to the opposing pitcher, RHP Bronson Arroyo -- in five innings. Two starts ago, he was pitching to return to .500 but fell short. Now he's 8-11 and heading for his second straight losing season. Last year, he was 7-16. Cain finished August 2-2 and hasn't had a winning month all season. --C-INF Pablo Sandoval went 2-for-4 with a triple (batting cleanup for the first time) and is hitting .393. He has hit safely in 13 of 15 games since reaching the majors, including 13 of his last 14.
--RF Randy Winn finished August hitting .400 with 46 hits in 115 at-bats, raising his season mark to .280 from .208. He went 2-for-5 on Sunday.
--LHP Jonathan Sanchez, after serving on the DL with a strained shoulder, will pitch Monday in Colorado. Shortly after being shelved, Sanchez said he was good to go. In his last outing, he gave up two runs and five hits in seven innings in a 3-1 loss at Houston. In his absence, RHP Matt Palmer made his first three starts in the big leagues.
BY THE NUMBERS: 3 -- Leadoff homers for Randy Winn this year. In his career, he's opened the top of the first with a homer 16 times.
