San Francisco Giants Roster Report 2009-04-11

San Francisco Giants Roster Report 2009-04-11
The Giants were confident heading into the season. Injuries weren't a major factor this spring, especially with pitchers (except LHP Noah Lowry, who hasn't appeared in a game since 2007), and management was confident new corner infielders Travis Ishikawa and Pablo Sandoval will shine in their first full big-league seasons. The offense is iffy -- GM Brian Sabean's only new bat is SS Edgar Renteria -- but the pitching seems deeper with the additions of starter Randy Johnson and relievers Jeremy Affeldt and Bobby Howry.

PLAYER NEWS:

--RHP Joe Martinez, who was drilled on the forehead by a liner Thursday, sustained a concussion and three hairline fractures in the skull, trainer Dave Groeschner said. He also has internal bleeding and a black eye. He was placed on the DL, and manager Bruce Bochy said he'd be surprised if Martinez weren't pitching again in a month. He'll remain hospitalized three or four days.

--RHP Justin Miller, who was promoted from Class AAA Fresno to replace RHP Joe Martinez (DL), made his Giants debut with two scoreless innings. Miller had a 1.46 ERA in 10 spring-training appearances.

--2B Emmanuel Burriss finally had a good offensive game, going 2-for-2 with two walks. He entered the game 0-for-10 with three strikeouts.

--RHP Luis Perdomo, a Rule 5 draftee (from St. Louis) who was designated for assignment by the Giants before opening day, was claimed off waivers by the Padres. Perdomo must stay on the Padres' big-league roster or else be offered back to the Cardinals.

MEDICAL WATCH:

RHP Joe Martinez (concussion, hairline fractures in skull) left the April 9 game after being struck in the head by a line drive. He was expected to be hospitalized for 3-4 days and was placed on the disabled list April 10.

LHP Noah Lowry (left forearm surgery in March 2008, left elbow surgery in September 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He hadn't resumed throwing as of opening day.

RHP Sergio Romo (sprained right elbow) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He isn't expected to return in April.
