San Francisco Giants Roster Report 2009-04-23

San Francisco Giants Roster Report 2009-04-23
The Giants scored 10 runs in their opener. Seven runs two days later. Since then, hardly anything -- 18 runs in nine games. Manager Bruce Bochy continues to shake up the lineup, but no configuration was working with any consistency through the first two weeks. Only one team, the Astros, had scored fewer runs. Giants hitters drew the fewest walks in the majors and struck out the third-most times in the NL. Bochy said he'd continue tweaking the lineup if the hitters continue to scuffle.

PLAYER NEWS:

--1B Travis Ishikawa got one of two hits off Padres starter RHP Chris Young through seven innings, though he originally wasn't supposed to play. Tuesday, manager Bruce Bochy said Rich Aurilia would play first, but Bochy changed his mind after Ishikawa took some decent hacks Wednesday. Ishikawa is hitting .211.

--CF Aaron Rowand was out of the lineup, partly because it was a day game after a night game and largely because he twisted his ankle on a relay throw in Tuesday's game. Andres Torres started in center and scored the game's only run -- singling, stealing a base and coming around on a ground-rule double by pinch-hitter Bengie Molina.

--C Steve Holm was recalled from Class AAA Fresno, giving the Giants a legitimate backup catcher for the first time this season. C Bengie Molina caught every inning of the season through Tuesday's game, and 3B Pablo Sandoval started at catcher Wednesday. Holm took the roster spot of LHP Alex Hinshaw, who was optioned to Fresno.

--LHP Jonathan Sanchez is having his next start skipped because of two off days this week. Sanchez, the No. 5 starter, is coming off 6 2/3 scoreless innings against the Diamondbacks and was available in relief Wednesday. With manager Bruce Bochy's rotation shuffling, RHP Tim Lincecum will face the Dodgers when the Giants return to San Francisco next week. If Sanchez's start hadn't been skipped, Lincecum would have missed the Dodgers.

MEDICAL WATCH:

RHP Joe Martinez (concussion, hairline fractures in skull) went on the 15-day disabled list April 10. He is unlikely to return before late May.

LHP Noah Lowry (left forearm surgery in March 2008, left elbow surgery in September 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. In mid-April, manager Bruce Bochy said he hoped Lowry would able to return at some point this season.

RHP Sergio Romo (sprained right elbow) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He could return as soon as early May.
