San Francisco Giants Roster Report 2009-04-24
The Giants scored 10 runs in their opener. Seven runs two days later. Since then, hardly anything -- 18 runs in nine games. Manager Bruce Bochy continues to shake up the lineup, but no configuration was working with any consistency through the first two weeks. Only one team, the Astros, had scored fewer runs. Giants hitters drew the fewest walks in the majors and struck out the third-most times in the NL. Bochy said he'd continue tweaking the lineup if the hitters continue to scuffle.

PLAYER NEWS:

--RHP Tim Lincecum will pitch Friday's game in Arizona. The last time through the rotation, the five Giants starters surrendered two earned runs (both against RHP Matt Cain) in 34 2/3 innings. Lincecum's contribution was eight scoreless innings against the Diamondbacks.

--OF Nate Schierholtz is the only position player who has been on the roster since opening day who hasn't started a game. Manager Bruce Bochy said he hopes to get Schierholtz, hitting .333 (2-for-6), in the lineup soon.

--CF Aaron Rowand's tweaked left ankle isn't serious, the Giants hope. Manager Bruce Bochy said Rowand could have played Wednesday, if necessary. Instead, OF Andres Torres got his first start of the season. Bochy said he'll try to play Rowand less in the first half this year to preserve him for the second half. Rowand struggled after the break last year, hitting .242.

--C Steve Holm was hitless in his last 18 at-bats with Class AAA Fresno before being recalled this week, giving the Giants a second catcher. The first two weeks of the season, C Bengie Molina caught every inning. Holm hit .262 in 49 games for the Giants last season.

MEDICAL WATCH:

RHP Joe Martinez (concussion, hairline fractures in skull) went on the 15-day disabled list April 10. He is unlikely to return before late May.

LHP Noah Lowry (left forearm surgery in March 2008, left elbow surgery in September 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. In mid-April, manager Bruce Bochy said he hoped Lowry would able to return at some point this season.

RHP Sergio Romo (sprained right elbow) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He could return as soon as early May.
