San Francisco Giants Roster Report 2009-04-28

San Francisco Giants Roster Report 2009-04-28
The rotation, as expected, has been the strength of the roster. Except for Randy Johnson's 3 1/3-inning stint on Saturday, the starters have been exceptional. They've had quality starts in seven of eight games and surrendered six earned runs in 54 innings through Sunday for a 1.00 ERA. The rest of the rotation: Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, Barry Zito and Jonathan Sanchez.

PLAYER NEWS:

--RHP Brian Wilson, who blew a save chance Sunday in Arizona, saved Monday's 5-4 victory over the Dodgers with a scoreless ninth. Wilson, on Twitter, said he was out until the wee hours Sunday morning -- the same day he blew a three-run lead to the Diamondbacks. But in interviews Monday, he said he made it all up, that he was in his hotel room Saturday night.

--LHP Barry Zito had a string of 13 straight scoreless innings -- seven against the Padres and six against the Dodgers -- before being charged with three runs in the seventh. He topped more than 100 pitches (109) for the first time this season, and his ERA dropped slightly from 5.63 to 5.24.

--OF Andres Torres is expected to go on the disabled list after sustaining a hamstring injury, manager Bruce Bochy said. It's possible he could be replaced by 2B-OF Eugenio Velez, who was optioned to Triple-A Fresno earlier in the day to make room for RHP Osiris Matos. Usually, a player must stay in the minors 10 days after being optioned, but Torres' injury (he was hurt running the bases) would allow Velez to come back right away.

--RHP Osiris Matos was recalled from Triple-A Fresno (1.04 ERA in 8 2/3 innings, 10 K's, two walks), and 2B-OF Eugenio Velez was optioned. The Giants' bullpen, especially the late inning relief, has had a heavy workload lately -- LHP Randy Johnson lasted 3 1/3 innings Saturday, and Sunday's game went 12 innings -- and the Giants wanted another arm in the bullpen. Velez was struggling, hitting .154. He made just one start, in center field.

--1B Rich Aurilia batted cleanup Monday, filling in for C Bengie Molina. Aurilia brought a .188 average into the game and got his first RBI Friday. It was his fifth start of the season, all against lefties. 1B Travis Ishikawa has started vs. righties.

MEDICAL WATCH:

OF Andres Torres (hamstring) was injured April 27 and appeared to be headed to the disabled list.

RHP Joe Martinez (concussion, hairline fractures in skull) went on the 15-day disabled list April 10. He is unlikely to return before late May.

LHP Noah Lowry (left forearm surgery in March 2008, left elbow surgery in September 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. In mid-April, manager Bruce Bochy said he hoped Lowry would able to return at some point this season.

RHP Sergio Romo (sprained right elbow) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He could return as soon as early May.
