San Francisco Giants Roster Report 2009-05-05

San Francisco Giants Roster Report 2009-05-05
The Giants had a .500 record in April and won two of their first three games in May despite scoring the fewest number of runs in the majors -- 77 through April. Why the winning record? Because of pitching. The Giants' staff owned the NL's third-lowest ERA in April, 3.90. Since April 17, the ERA is lowest in the majors.

PLAYER NEWS:

--LHP Randy Johnson did not accompany the team to Chicago. He wasn't slated to face the Cubs in the two-game series. Instead, he'll meet the team in Denver, where he'll face the Rockies on Wednesday. The Giants didn't think it was important for Johnson, who's 45 with a history of back trouble, to make a flight that wasn't necessary.

--INF Rich Aurilia's game-ending single Sunday (a 1-0 victory over Colorado in 10 innings) was the Giants' only hit with runners in scoring position in 18 at-bats through Sunday. The Giants own the N.L.'s lowest batting average with RISP (.210: 42-for-200). It's .195 (25-for-128) at home. Monday in Chicago, the Giants were 1-for-7 with RISP.

--RHP Tim Lincecum, the reigning Cy Young Award winner who will make his sixth start Tuesday in Chicago, has given up four earned runs while striking out 33 batters (four walks) in his past 23 innings. In two career starts at Wrigley Field, he has given up two earned runs in 14 1/3 innings. He won both starts.

--RF Randy Winn was 0-for-3 with two strikeouts, his average falling to .209. He batted sixth for the first time since 2007 and continued slumping. Meantime, RF Nate Schierholtz got another pinch hit and is hitting .296, putting more pressure on Winn -- and perhaps management -- as he's making a case for more playing time.

MEDICAL WATCH:

LF Randy Winn (right oblique cramp) left the May 2 game and sat out on May 3. He was back in the lineup May 4.

OF Andres Torres (strained left hamstring) went on the 15-day disabled list April 28.

RHP Joe Martinez (concussion, hairline fractures in skull) went on the 15-day disabled list April 10. He is unlikely to return before late May.

LHP Noah Lowry (left forearm surgery in March 2008, left elbow surgery in September 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. In mid-April, manager Bruce Bochy said he hoped Lowry would able to return at some point this season.

RHP Sergio Romo (sprained right elbow) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He won't be able to pitch before mid-May.
