San Francisco Giants Roster Report 2009-05-15

San Francisco Giants Roster Report 2009-05-15
--SS Edgar Renteria felt a tight right hamstring in the final steps of his infield single in the eighth inning Thursday, and Eugenio Velez pinch-ran for him. Renteria will have an MRI on Friday and is expected to miss at least a little bit of time. He'll be replaced at shortstop Friday by Juan Uribe.

--C Bengie Molina stayed in Thursday's game despite taking a foul tip off his right knee. He hit the ground and needed several moments before squatting again. In the ninth, he opened with a double off Mets RHP Francisco Rodriguez and was stranded. He had two hits and an RBI.

--CF Aaron Rowand went 1-for-3 with two walks. He was in the lineup despite having been 0-for-13 in his career off Mets starter John Maine. It wasn't because manager Bruce Bochy had a hunch. It was because there wasn't another option. RF Nate Schierholtz had a bruised rib (after knocking against Rowand pursuing a ball Wednesday) and was unavailable.

--RHP Sergio Romo (elbow) and OF Andres Torres (hamstring) are joining high Class A San Jose for rehab assignments. Before returning to the Giants, Romo is expected to make five appearances and Torres is expected to get at least 30 at-bats, according to manager Bruce Bochy. Romo started for San Jose on Thursday and tossed one scoreless inning.

--OF Ben Copeland returned to the Giants organization, specifically high Class A San Jose. He was taken by the A's in the December Rule 5 draft but sustained a shoulder injury crashing into the outfield wall in spring training and never appeared for the A's. Copeland was taken off the disabled list and designated for assignment. He had to be offered back to the Giants, who welcomed him back.

MEDICAL WATCH:

SS Edgar Renteria (tight right hamstring) left the May 15 game, and he will miss at least another game or two.

LF Fred Lewis (sore left toe) didn't play May 12. He appeared as a pinch hitter May 13, and he started May 14.

OF Andres Torres (strained left hamstring) went on the 15-day disabled list April 28. He will begin a rehab assignment with Class A San Jose during the weekend of May 15-17.

RHP Joe Martinez (concussion, hairline fractures in skull) went on the 15-day disabled list April 10. He is unlikely to return before late May.

RHP Sergio Romo (sprained right elbow) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He was pitching in extended spring training in early May, and he began a rehab assignment with Class A San Jose on May 14.

LHP Noah Lowry (left forearm surgery in March 2008, left elbow surgery in September 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. In mid-April, manager Bruce Bochy said he hoped Lowry would able to return at some point this season.
