Clark, 44, was a five-time All-Star with the Giants from 1986-93. Beginning with his first major league at-bat, in which he famously hit a home run off Nolan Ryan, Clark helped elevate the franchise out of one of its darkest eras. His thick eye black, high-pitched voice and ultra-confident demeanor were his trademarks.
Clark had spent the past five seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks as a special assistant to club president Jeff Moorad, his former agent. Moorad resigned earlier this month to front a group that is purchasing the San Diego Padres.
Clark had made infrequent appearances at AT&T Park over the past few seasons, usually when the Diamondbacks were in town; the crowd cheered him whenever he was shown on the stadium's video board. Clark was notably absent last year, however, when the Giants held a reunion of infielders as part of their 50th anniversary celebration.
Giants managing partner Bill Neukom is expected to join in making the announcement.
